By Lindsey Williams Likely you have smiled many times at whirligigs as you drove past them in someones yard — without knowing you were admiring a 10,000-year-old folk-art form. Hitch weather vanes to windmills and you get whirligigs an ancient device whose only purpose is to delight onlookers. Though once widely popular, whirligigs have declined in popularity except for those young in heart. A few local fans keep the historic devices alive. Every civilization dependent on the weather for farming or seafaring invented the simple pointer that indicates wind direction. Representations are found in Samaria, Egypt and China. We still rely on them. Windmills canted blades attached to a hub turn wheels that grind grain, pump water or generate electricity are almost as old as weather vanes. The genius that melded weather vanes and windmills is long forgotten, but not his/her legacy. Medieval European tapestries show children playing with small whirligigs of a hobbyhorse on one end of a stick and 4-bladed propellers at the other end. This was a time of chivalry and knights on horses wielding lances and swords to rescue maidens in distress. The 1440 edition of the Oxford English Dictionary defined whyrlegyge as any spinning toy. In the late 1700s of colonial America, human figures waving their arms — holding swords, shovels, pitchforks and other implements were popular. When George Washington rode home to Mt. Vernon after the Revolutionary War he brought in his saddlebags whilagigs for Marthas grandchildren. Washington Irving in his 1820 Legend of Sleepy Hollow wrote of a little wooden warrior who, armed with a sword in each hand, was most valiantly fighting the wind on the pinnacle of the barn. In the late 1800s, popular whirligigs portrayed Indians paddling canoes, birds with flailing wings, men sawing wood and women scrubbing clothes in a washtub. First settlers on the south shore of the Peace River roadstead of Charlotte Harbor was Fred and Anna Howard in 1875. The following year they were joined by Freds brother Jarvis and his family. Jarvis kept a diary and related their first Christmas together in 1876. Among the gifts exchanged was a whirligig from Fred and Anna to the Jarvis family. Size and design of the contraption was not stated. Whirligigs experienced a renaissance during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Men out or work could make whirligigs with scrap lumber and sell them from their front yards for one dollar. This would feed a family of four for a day. (I know.) Interestingly, whirligigs sold well. They were relatively inexpensive and boosted spirits when times were grim. A favorite toy during the depression was the pin-wheel — basic whirligig. Dime stores sold them for ten cents, of course. They were constructed of a square of colorful celluloid the first plastic the points of which were split, bent together and nailed to a stick. You created wind to spin the whirligig by running or holding it out a car window. A beautiful, triple-tier pin-wheel whirligig –with multi-colored, counter-rotating vanes — grace a yard across the street from the Punta Gorda Isles Yacht Club. The most spectacular whirligig in southwest Florida is about ten feet tall in Punta Gorda. It spins merrily at the western end of Olympia Avenue near the Visual Arts Center and Fishermens Village. Its vertical and horizontal blades of polished and crimson stainless steel was created — and is maintained — by Stephen Schwarz, a member of the Visual Arts Center. He has several more such works of art at his home. Traditional whirligigs are crafted by hobbyists like Gerry Philbrick of Punta Gorda Isles. He fancies traditional designs such as flying cardinals and little men sawing wood energetically in a breeze. Many history and art museums feature whirligig collections. Private craftsmen create whirligig gardens for fun and profit. Roadside craft vendors offer a wide variety of whirligigs for sale. The best vendor in these parts is Chris Kringle Williams the Toy Maker at Fort Ogden on S.R. 17 between Punta Gorda and Arcadia. His Santas workshop is set back from the highway but easily visible. He and his wife Delores preside over a salesroom of thousands of handcrafted novelties in a historic general-store building. Craftsmen or craftswomen will find a book by Anders Lunde interesting and instructive. Whirligigs Design & Construction (Chilton Book Company, Radnor, Pa.) can be ordered from any bookstore. Lunde is credited with reviving the whirligig a quarter-century ago. A well-known painter and wood sculptor, Lunde won First Prize in a sculpture at the1981 Durham (North Carolina) Art Guild Juried Exhibition. He received two awards for his whirligigs at the 1983 Juried Exhibition of North Carolina Crafts. His book contains easy-to-follow instructions and patterns for constructing whirligigs from pinwheels to elaborate groupings of several animated figures. Spread betting, for instance? Day trading? Futures? Those promoting these strategies speak of the potential for massive gain. It is possible, they claim, to double, treble, quadruple your cash or more in the shortest possible time. The idea of making a vast profit in a matter of weeks, days, even hours, is of course extremely tempting. So this week I thought I would explain how these much publicised financial instruments work. Spread betting has garnered a great deal of attention over the last few years. Its appeal lies in the fact that it allows you to bet cheaply on the rise or fall of an asset without actually owning it. Historically, if you wanted to trade in different markets such as international shares, indices, property or commodities you had to use a variety of different methods to do so. Not with spread betting. You can get exposure to a market instantly, with only a small deposit typically about 10% - 20% of the value of your bet. In other words, a 1,000 bet could cost you as little as 100. Whats more, there is no commission to be paid, no stamp duty on dealing and no tax to pay on winnings. How does it work? A spread betting firm will predict where an individual share or market will stand at a future date or period of time. They wont name a specific price but rather an upper and lower range. This range is referred to as the spread. You can then bet on the spread in one of two different ways. If you expect the share or market to be above the spread you can buy at the high end. If you expect the share or market to be below the spread you can opt for the low end. This is best explained with an example. Supposing a spread betting firm is quoting a spread of 6,100 6,110 for the FTSE 100 during January 2007. If you feel this is a bit pessimistic you might decide to bet 100 a point above 6,110. Any time before the end of January you can close your bet and take your gain or settle up your losses. Lets say you are right and the index climbs 50 points to 6,160 at which juncture you close the bet. You will collect 5,000 (50 points x 100). Lets say, on the other hand, you are wrong and the market falls 50 points below the top end of the spread to 6060 (6,110 less 50). Your error of judgement is going to cost you 5,000! Basically, the more the market moves in your direction the more you stand to gain and the more it moves against you the more you stand to lose. It is possible to limit your losses by paying for something called a guaranteed stop-loss but the cost is usually so high as to make the chance of gain almost impossible. Day trading first came into the news about six or seven years ago as a method by which small, private investors could make money from the stock market. The name says it all. Day traders rapidly buy and sell stocks throughout the day in the hope that their stocks will continue climbing or falling in value for the seconds to minutes they own the stock, allowing them to lock in quick profits. It was the result of two phenomena. The first was greater market volatility with prices of some stocks especially in the information technology sector rising or falling by a substantial amount each day. The second was lower dealing charges allowing investors to buy and sell for a relatively low cost. At the heart of the concept is the idea that you need to close your position at the end of each trading day taking your gains or losses then and there. Putting your money into a futures or commodity contract also holds out the promise of substantial gain. As with spread betting, commodity trading involves predicting the price of a particular commodity anything from gold to frozen orange juice, and silver to pork bellies at a specific point in the future. And, as with spread betting, gearing plays a big factor in the activity. Its history, however, is rather more respectable. These contracts were originally a way for manufacturers to reduce their risk. For instance, in the days when silver was more important to the photographic industry than it is in this digital age a company like Kodak might contract to buy a set amount of the metal a year before they actually needed it at a pre-agreed price. On making the contract they would traditionally pay a deposit usually 10% of the total contract value. Before long it was realised that this was a way in which anyone not just manufacturers - might make a great deal of money. How? Like this. Lets say you think silver is going to go up in price. You pay 10,000 to purchase a 100,000 contract. If you are right and silver goes up 10% you make 10,000 doubling your money. On the other hand, if silver falls 10% you lose your 10,000. And if it falls 20% you would lose an additional 10,000. By James Putnam Thinking of moving up from shore fishing? The advantages of being on the water are many. I love the closeness to nature, and how peaceful and tranquil it is. Wild creatures are less intimidated by people when they are floating in the water. I have seen mule deer, coyotes, fox, and all kinds of waterfowl. My favorite times have been drifting through small herds of wading elk in my local body of water, Lake Estes, Colorado. I have taken photos of elk from five feet away. They took no more interest in my kayak and me than they would a duck or a loon. There is also the mobility aspect of kayak fishing. A lot of times if the fish arent biting where you are, they are elsewhere. Its easy to fish a bay here, a point there, a cove on the other side of the lake, the inlet etc… Estes Park is a small town, and often Ill run across some of my fishing buddies in one of the lake’s honey holes. My kayak has two rod holders so I can troll while I travel from spot to spot. The rod holders arent necessary, as you can place your rod in the bow of the boat and troll backwards. Some lakes/ponds dont allow boats, but do allow personal water craft. At these places you can fish structures that you cant reach from shore. As my kayak weighs less than forty pounds…my tackle box weighs more…its easy to hike in. Although float tubes are also a convenient way to fish, I prefer the kayak. Personally, I find them to be more fun on the water, but there are other advantages. To me the most important is convenience. By the time I get to a lake/pond Im “jonesing” so bad to fish, I have to fight the urge to cast out the car window. There is no inflating, no waders to put on, and no awkward flippers to strap on. I simply unlock and unstrap my “yak” from the roof, throw it in the water and go. Another very important advantage is speed. In Colorado the weather can change in an instant. In a tube I dont feel safe if the weather looks as if it could turn for the worse, so I stay near shore. In the kayak, no matter how far out I am, I can return to shore in minutes. I also like the fact that I can carry gear. Its easy to tote two or three rods, a tackle box, and even a cooler. This is helpful during camping trips and family outings. I have used the kayak at bigger reservoirs, like Aurora, to carry gear from one side to the other to meet people shore fishing. Sometimes Ill get lucky and catch one before my buddies get around the lake. It easily crosses shallow areas in lakes. If you have fished in a tube you know the places Im talking about. The water is less than a foot deep, but the ground beneath is like quick sand. In a kayak you can drift across areas that are inches deep with ease. You dont need a lot of money to get into kayak fishing. Obviously you need a kayak. I have a Heritage Feather Light 9, which was designed for fishing. Before that I fished from an inflatable Sevylor I bought off a Kool-aide vendor after he used it for a display, so any kayak will do. Oars can also be costly. I use a mid-range one now, however, the $20.00 one I had before was sufficient. I used to use a cheap foam and strap roof rack, which could be loaded and unloaded fairly effortlessly. However, I feel safer and more secure with the Thule rack I have now. It is sturdier, quicker, and wicked easier to use. I highly recommend trying kayak fishing. It is both relaxing and exciting. It can bring you to areas of your local lakes that you have not fished before. It is a relatively inexpensive way to try trolling, which I have found very effective.
